Attendees gathered at Penn Station Plaza to begin the silent march to the Japanese American United Church. They dressed in WWII-era clothes and carried suitcases to illustrate the time period when Japanese Americans were forcibly removed from their homes and shipped to internment camps around the U.S.
Participants held the silent march down 7th Avenue to the Japanese American United Church.
Tak Furumoto, 75, a Vietnam War veteran, was born in Tule Lake internment camp in California. After WWII, he and his family were deported to Hiroshima where he lived for 10 years. He returned to the U.S. in 1956 where he later served in Vietnam.
